The information below let’s you know where to find free legal services within the Canberra Region. It has been compiled by the volunteers at Volunteering and Contact ACT. We do our best to keep it as up-to-date as possible, however, if you do see something that is incorrect please let us know and we will update the information as soon as we can.

ACT Pro Bono Clearing House (ACT Law Society)

02 6274 0300, Mon-Fri 9am-5pm. Level 4/ 1 Farrell Place Canberra City 2601. Provides free legal advice on simple legal matters. Assists in determining a legal problem and the possible need for engaging the services of the Legal Aid Office or a private solicitor to solve it. Interviews are by appointment only.

Legal Aid Office ACT

02 6243 3411, Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm. 2 Allsop Street, Canberra City 2601. Free legal advice and assistance regarding legal issues in civil, criminal and family law is available for all ACT residents, either by phone or in person. In particular, those who are socially or economically disadvantaged. Legal representation is also available (means & merits tested).

1. Free Legal Aid Helpline: 1300 654 314, Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm. Free legal info, referral and limited advice to anyone in the ACT.

2. Family Law Duty Solicitor: Weekdays at Magistrate Court 10am-3pm. Assistance with family law matters.

3. Domestic Violence & Personal Protection: 02 6207 1874, Mon-Fri 9am-4:30pm. Magistrate’s Court.

4. Criminal Practice: 02 6243 3407, Mon-Fri 8:30am-5pm.

Consumer Law Centre of the ACT (CLC)

02 6143 0044 / 1800 007 007, 9am-5pm weekdays. Level 1 back of Waldorf Apartments, 2 Akuna Street, City. Project of Care Financial Counselling Service. Provides free legal assistance and advice to low to moderate income consumers, primarily in the areas of Consumer Law e.g, credit, telecommunications and utilities, as well as general fair trading and consumer protection. 1. Housing Law & Social Security Law

02 6218 7977, Mon, Tue, Thu, Fri 9:30am-1pm. Information and advocacy in private and public tenancy / Centrelink / Social Security and Legal Aid appeals – people on low incomes.

2. Night Time Legal Advice Service

02 6218 7999, Tue nights 6pm-8pm. One-off service. Generalist legal service operating each Tuesday night only. Telephone and drop in service (latter before 7pm to be assisted on night), first come first served.

3. Street Law

4. Disability Discrimination Law

5. Socio-Legal Practice Clinic (SLP)

Mon & Tue mornings – Drop-in. At Canberra Community Law 21 Barry Drive, Turner. To help people with housing and Centrelink problems who have high level of vulnerability and no supports. Offers legal and social work assessment with possibility of case management.

Tenants Advice Service

Women’s Legal Centre

South Eastern Women’s Domestic Violence Court Advocacy
